Ryan O'Leary:Hey Jessica!
Jessica Paquette:Hi ryan!
Jessica Paquette:Ready for the Preakness?
Ryan O'Leary:yep...mint julep in hand
Jessica Paquette:No, the drink for the Preakness is a Black-eyed Susan
Ryan O'Leary:well, i like to buck trends...so I'm gonna stick with the mint julep b/c I like it a lot better
Jessica Paquette:Fair enough
Ryan O'Leary:more importantly...is California Chrome ready?
Ryan O'Leary:everyone is talking about this "cough"
Jessica Paquette:How's this for authenticity as a horse expert? I literally got off my own horse minutes before this started. His dad ran in the Derby actually
Jessica Paquette:The cough doesn't matter. It's been blown way out of proportion
Ryan O'Leary:I love it...I doubt many of the NBC people are doing this?
Jessica Paquette:It's pretty much the cough heard round the world
Ryan O'Leary:yeah, Jordan had his "flu game"
Jessica Paquette:I am guessing you're right.
Jessica Paquette:It's not even like that. If there was any doubt this horse wasn't 100% he wouldn't run, period
Ryan O'Leary:your man crush Patrice Bergeron played with broken ribs and a punctured lung
Jessica Paquette:They've been closely monitoring his temperature too
Ryan O'Leary:yeah...can you get me into the mind of the trainer and owner at this point
Ryan O'Leary:i'm fascinated with that process
Jessica Paquette:Well us Bostonians are tough stuff
Ryan O'Leary:you are...and by the way, would have been cooler if you were doing this from on top of a horse with your iPhone
Jessica Paquette:Every little thing is monitored - how much he is eating, drinking, pooping (seriously)
Ryan O'Leary:glad nobody monitors that on me
Trey Williamson:Does Preakness have as much ceremonial culture as the Derby? Hats, outfits, drinks etc.
Jessica Paquette:I thought about that but my horse sometimes forgets he is a RETIRED racehorse
Jessica Paquette:But horses as athletes can't speak for themselves so the trainer really advocates for them
Ryan O'Leary:so the cough is no big deal?
Ryan O'Leary:tell me why
Jessica Paquette:Really no big deal. Apparently he had it before the derby and look how that worked out
Ryan O'Leary:yeah...a super easy win
Ryan O'Leary:and this blister they're talking about?
Jessica Paquette:They seem to think it's just a little bit of a scratchy throat from feed or dust or something, not indicative of a breathing problem. I think they scoped him
Tom Lorenzo:Is California Chrome "that good" or is it a matter of a poor field?
Jessica Paquette:A scope is a lense on a tube that goes down the throat to see that everything is normal
Ryan O'Leary:i think it's funny for your casual fan to see how fast and strong they are, but also very delicate in a sense
Jessica Paquette:They are essentially 1100 pound porcelain figurines
Jessica Paquette:Mine constantly finds new ways to harm himself and cost me money
Ryan O'Leary:so would you say that horses have to be 100% in order to run
Jessica Paquette:They are checked by a track veterinarian. If they don't pass inspection they don't run
Ryan O'Leary:that's incredible...so different from other pro sports
Ryan O'Leary:but Cali Chrome hasn't moved off that 3-5 line, so obviously everyone believes he is good to go
Jessica Paquette:Most other sports don't pose the real risk horse racing does. The jockeys literally risk their lives
Jessica Paquette:I'm confident he is
Ryan O'Leary:so let's get into the race itself and answer a Tawker question
Ryan O'Leary:i'll let you grab that one Jessica
Jessica Paquette:I think it is an average group but he has been consistently and significantly superior
Jessica Paquette:I don't think he's the best ever but he's really good
Ryan O'Leary:you probably know this already, but I was intrigued by this information:
Ryan O'Leary:Not even Secretariat, Affirmed, and Seattle Slew were 3-5 favorites at the Preakness...that's crazy
Jessica Paquette:That is crazy. But keep in mind there wasn't the ability to wager online back then - more people can play and drive down odds now
Ryan O'Leary:so do you think that 3-5 is the right number at this point?
Ryan O'Leary:Is California Chrome "that good" or is it a matter of a poor field?
Ryan O'Leary:will it move?
Jessica Paquette:Against this group, yes. But odds are just odds
Jessica Paquette:It may but not by much
Ryan O'Leary:a lot of people are getting excited by Social Inclusion and Bayern, tell me about these horses
Jessica Paquette:Social inclusion skipped the derby in favor of pointing to this race. He's fast but his early races were flattered by a speed favoring Gulfstream track
Jessica Paquette:Bayern gets blinkers off and may try to sit off the pace. Baffert is always dangerous but this horse didn't impress in the derby trial
Ryan O'Leary:the weather report for the race is very mild...71 degrees...sunny
Ryan O'Leary:does that play into any one horse's favor?
Jessica Paquette:They are getting a ton of rain today but it should be a nice fast track
Ryan O'Leary:should be nice for drinking those black eyed susans
Ryan O'Leary:at least
Jessica Paquette:I wonder if with all the rain it will be deep though, may not help the speed
Jessica Paquette:I have fond memories of them from my college years. They are a breakfast drink
Ryan O'Leary:are we doing fun college stories now?
Ryan O'Leary:do tell Jessica..haha, kidding
Jessica Paquette:Mine were pretty minimal. They dall me jessy no fun at work
Ryan O'Leary:since you're up on this stuff, you can grab Trey's question here
Jessica Paquette:The infield is their biggest tradition. It makes the derby infield seem like a church group
Ryan O'Leary:that's insane
Ryan O'Leary:I know two infields...baseball and a Nascar one once
Jessica Paquette:I've never braved it. I'm a really little person and could easily have never been heard from again.
Ryan O'Leary:well that's why you make a fine rider
Jessica Paquette:I like my horse power to be the four legged kind.
Ryan O'Leary:Does Preakness have as much ceremonial culture as the Derby? Hats, outfits, drinks etc.
Jessica Paquette:Oh I'm not a jockey, I show jumpers as a hobby
Ryan O'Leary:gotcha...the Nascar crowd is ridiculous
Jessica Paquette:On a retired racehorse
Ryan O'Leary:I think when you watch the Preakness, the pomp and circumstance is very similar
Ryan O'Leary:the ladies get all dressed up
Ryan O'Leary:the men try to match
Jessica Paquette:On there is definitely some pageantry but it's overall more casual than the derby
Ryan O'Leary:and people there take it very seriously...but I think of the Kentucky Derby like the Masters in golf
Ryan O'Leary:it's THE tournament, while the U.S. Open is a big deal, but probably always second fiddle
Jessica Paquette:Agreed. The derby is the race everyone, even people who aren't regular fans, watch
Ryan O'Leary:and then the Belmont is like the British Open, where it's a true test of ability and versatility
Ryan O'Leary:okay, enough stupid golf analogies from me
Jessica Paquette:And will get a ton of attention if there is a Triple Crown on the line
Jessica Paquette:What's your handicap?
Ryan O'Leary:in golf?
Ryan O'Leary:when I was in high school, it was single digits
Ryan O'Leary:now that I don't play as much, "the balloon has gone up" as my old coach used to say
Jessica Paquette:That happens
Ryan O'Leary:are you a golfer?
Jessica Paquette:I can participate in shotgun tournaments without completely embarrassing myself but that's about it
Ryan O'Leary:that's all you need!
Ryan O'Leary:okay, let's talk about making money tomorrow
Jessica Paquette:Back to racing, did you hear that the best horse in the country had to have life saving surgery today?
Ryan O'Leary:haha..we'll do yours first
Ryan O'Leary:tell me about it
Jessica Paquette:Okay that we can do. Even though he is chalk, there is value in the race
Jessica Paquette:Wise Dan, two time horse of the year, had to have emergency colic surgery for a twisted small intestine, which goes back to how fragile these guys are
Ryan O'Leary:was the surgery successful?
Jessica Paquette:Yes, thankfully, but the next 72 hours are crucial
Ryan O'Leary:definitely our thoughts are with him
Ryan O'Leary:back to the gambling, let's help some folks out here
Ryan O'Leary:you're a race analyst
Jessica Paquette:Sounds good. Bring it on
Ryan O'Leary:you handicap races
Jessica Paquette:I do
Ryan O'Leary:so if you were the common better who's getting excited for tomorrow and had $100 to play with, what are you doing
Ryan O'Leary:first let's list some lines here
Ryan O'Leary:California Chrome: 3-5 (odds on favorite)
Ryan O'Leary:Social Inclusion: 5-1
Jessica Paquette:$50 exacta key California Chrome on top over Ring Weekend and Kid Cruz
Jessica Paquette:Sorry. I'm very decisive!
Ryan O'Leary:Bayern: 10-1
Ryan O'Leary:Ride on Curlin: 10-1
Ryan O'Leary:okay, so to a lot of people, you just spoke french...break this down
Jessica Paquette:An exacta is when you pick the horses who finish 1-2
Jessica Paquette:By keying California chrome on top, he has to win and either of the other two has to finish second for me to cash in
Ryan O'Leary:and what's the payout?
Ryan O'Leary:and where are you blowing it on new clothes?
Jessica Paquette:That depends entirely on the odds and the pool of money wagered
Jessica Paquette:I have a horse. He literally eats all of my money.
Ryan O'Leary:life is a cycle I guess
Jessica Paquette:But it will keep him in hay, carrots and candy for awhile anyhow
Ryan O'Leary:so you're not buying the latest hype on social inclusion and bayern
Jessica Paquette:Longshot ring weekend is my big sleeper here
Jessica Paquette:Not at all
Ryan O'Leary:i think a lot of casual betters are going to spend a lot of money on them
Jessica Paquette:That's what us pros sometimes refer to as uneducated money :)
Ryan O'Leary:sleeper talk is perfect...I think you can help a lot of people make some summer vacation money
Ryan O'Leary:why is Longshot Weekend your big sleeper
Jessica Paquette:His trainer graham motion is one of the sharpest guys in the game
Ryan O'Leary:and I love his name
Jessica Paquette:He's getting a big test here and will have company for the lead, but Motion is the best.
Jessica Paquette:I met graham motion for the first time this summer at saratoga and I was the most awkward fangirl
Ryan O'Leary:what did you do?
Ryan O'Leary:did you have him sign something?
Jessica Paquette:Ran up to him, introduced myself and professed by love for him as a trainer in the most stuttering awkward way for someone who speaks allllll the time professionally
Ryan O'Leary:when are you sending me the "Save the Date"
Jessica Paquette:But I'm sure he walked away thinking that girl from Suffolk Downs is weird
Jessica Paquette:Ha! My boyfriend was standing by laughing at me.
Ryan O'Leary:hahaha...that's awesome
Ryan O'Leary:so Ring Weekend comes out of the fourth post with California Chrome next to him in the third position...how does that shape the race?
Jessica Paquette:California Chrome does need to break well, but with only 9 rivals not 18 like the derby it shouldn't be a deal breaker if he doesn't
Ryan O'Leary:so a horse you feel comfortable carrying the lead or coming from the pack?
Jessica Paquette:He's more of a stalker sort. He will be close up, maybe right off the first flight of front runners
Ryan O'Leary:okay...give me your long shot with a real chance here
Jessica Paquette:Kid Cruz isn't good enough to win but he has a big late move and has home track advantage. He's a live longshot
Ryan O'Leary:worth putting a couple bucks on if you've got a bit to play with?
Jessica Paquette:Sure, stranger things have happened
Ryan O'Leary:so safe to say you're all in on California Chrome taking the second leg...
Ryan O'Leary:so let's look to a few weeks from now, when the focus switches to New York and the Belmont
Jessica Paquette:I am. The Belmont could be a different story but I think he at least has this one
Ryan O'Leary:why is that extra quarter-mile such a challenge?
Jessica Paquette:A lot can happen in three weeks anf fresh faces will be very dangerous
Jessica Paquette:Horses aren't bred for stamina anymore
Ryan O'Leary:speed, speed, speed?
Ryan O'Leary:you've studied California Chrome, you know his pedigree...so what will he do in New York?
Jessica Paquette:I think he had already outrun his pedigree and finishes so strongly that I don't think the extra quarter mile is a big deal
Ryan O'Leary:who are the new shooters you'd be afraid of there?
Jessica Paquette:Of constitution is back from injury, he will be really tough. Tonalist also got some buzz after his last win
Ryan O'Leary:but overall, this crop of 3 year-olds just isn't that good compared to last years...so barring the unforeseen you're staying on California Chrome to make some history?
Jessica Paquette:It started out one of the deepest and best in years. The big stars all got hurt except CC - he's done everything right
Ryan O'Leary:you've said he's not the "super horse" and that's fair
Ryan O'Leary:but if he changes the 36 year Triple Crown Curse, what will his legacy be?
Jessica Paquette:Correct but there is no reason he can't be a really special horse
Jessica Paquette:He could be the one that ended the drought. And will deserve to be spoken of in the same line as the other triple crown winners
Ryan O'Leary:will we say his name with that same veracity as Seattle Slew, Affirmed, War Admiral and Secratariat
Jessica Paquette:Yes. There's a reason no horse has win it since Affirmed - it's really hard to do
Ryan O'Leary:okay...as we wrap...what is your final prediction for the Triple Crown and odds?
Jessica Paquette:I think he gets the job done. At this point, 5-1 to sweep the whole thing
Ryan O'Leary:it has been written.
Ryan O'Leary:Okay Jessica, I'm gonna geek out and promote you
Ryan O'Leary:you're a very sharp analyst
Jessica Paquette:Sweet, thanks Ryan, this was fun
Ryan O'Leary:everyone needs to follow you: @jmpaquette
Ryan O'Leary:if you're crazy and want to follow me, I'm at @BR0Leary
Jessica Paquette:Do it!
Ryan O'Leary:have fun tomorrow with the race and have a Black Eyed Susan for me!
Ryan O'Leary:thanks everyone!
brittany galvan:Hey any cuties?
Golden Gamal Elsharqawy:Ho
